Barefoot pathfinders training in the “Hat Less” hole at the Jatunyacu river.

The “Hat Less”” hole is a classic in the Jatunyacu River, is a class III, the most popular of the area, one of the main tributaries of the Amazon, the meaning of this Quichua name in English is “Big Water” Jatun=Big, Yacu=Water, the water is crystal clear haven’t been contaminated because it comes from the Llanganates area, the water is around 15 Celsius and comes from the frozen ice of the Cotopaxi Volcano.
The “Hat less” is in the left side, a couple of rapids after Serena Bridge, this is the perfect hole to enter with a brave group to surf or have a big hit and good fun, we choose to stay half day at this hole studying the hole from the inside and outside, with rafts, river boards, swimming, and kayaks. In the river board was a super fun experience, swimming was all right also, in kayak you could feel more aggressive, and in the rafts it kept us in the hole for a while. After the day everyone had tried the strength of the river and kept the control in situations like this, and the most important is that they learnt to stay calm in this situation and flow with the river.

These two videos where filmed at the same time from outside and inside you can see both points of view sometimes in the video looks harder than being there, you can try to play both at the same time, try to match the videos at the right timing.

Here you can see the same hole but in a river board:

After a good training in commercial trips with professional guides and with more experience these barefoot pathfinders will be ready to take you down the river in a safe and fun way.
