Meet Galapagos from another point of view

Isla Isabela: Sierra Negra volcano (1,500 m.o.s.l)

The Sierra Negra volcano is the largest volcano of the islands. Once you get to the edge of the crater, you will descend into the vents at the bottom of the boiler. The peak promises one of the best panoramic views of the island.

With the help of several international organizations, the Charles Darwin Foundation was established in 1959. In 2009 it celebrated its 50th anniversary. Its main function is to preserve the ecosystem of the area, declared at risk in 2007. A visit of the foundation is a helpful and recomendable experience in order to understand the problems of the region.

Isla Floreana – Post Office Bay

This island truly is a paradise. It is full of fantastic legends and beautiful landscapes. It has long been known as Post Office Bay. Here you can find a wooden barrel that was installed to function as a post office in the eighteenth century. The ships returning home collected the mail from the barrel and transported it to destinations throughout the world.

I was also visited Isla Floreana – Post Office Bay. Early in the afternoon we are back to the boat and off to the famous Post Office Bay. There is an old barrel adorned with a variety of signs pointing the direction and giving the distance to places all over the world. It is here that early settlers or visitors would leave their mail in hopes that someone who might be going in the right direction would take their mail and deliver it or pass it on.

The Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF) was contracted by the Government of Ecuador over 40 years ago to provide the scientific input into the management of the Galapagos National Park. The Park and the Charles Darwin Research Station (the scientific arm of the CDF) have collaborated closely over the years in a successful example of co-operation between national and international agencies. Their offices are within walking distance of each other in Puerto Ayora. The Galapagos Conservation Trust and the other Friends of Galapagos organisations are affiliated to the CDF.

We hiked to the view point at the Sierra Negra Volcano 1.124 m (3.688 ft) where we had a fantastic view of the crater and then hiked down to the Volcan Chico  and saw steaming fumaroles on the way, from there we could see the “Canal Bolivar”  and the whole Island, was an unforgettable day!
