Rock climbing in Ecuador
The tradition and the culture of high altitude mountaineering dominated in the past, but younger generations are discovering Ecuador as a world class rock climbing spot. Some groups of these climbers are taking the challenge and responsibility of protecting new climbing routes with bolts.
Close to Quito there are a few places for sport climbing in 20-30 meters routes in Sigsipamba, Santa Clara, Guagua Pichincha volcano & Cuyuja.
The best rock climbing of Ecuador is in the southern part of the country, close to Cuenca, all together there are about 250 routes in Paute, Cojitambo, El Cajas, Giron, Sayausa, Chacalata (boulder). This is the reason why in the holidays, dozens of climbers from Quito don’t mind driving for 9 hours to enjoy this climbing.

That sounds incredible.
My husband and I leave on September 30th to backpack to various countries around the world for a year or so.
As we have been planning for our adventure we have been updating a blog. http://www.nomadbackpackers.com We would love to have other opinions, ideas, encouragement, advice, helpful tips, and more left as comments.
I really hope we get to do some rock climbing somewhere along the way.
Thanks,
Natalie
