The issue with the Chimbo River in Bucay.
We discovered an issue with the way that waste in being handled by the town of Bucay, Ecuador. The city of Bucay is dumping massive amounts of garbage below the end point of our rafting trip. Barefoot Expeditions called the Municipality of Bucay to urge them to change the way they dispose of the garbage. Also, we wanted to give them a chance to rectify before our next visit. The area is so beautiful for adventure sports that seems so disrespectful to dump garbage on it.
The Municipality promised to clean the dumping area before the trip. We will report back on these efforts once we run our trip. We hope the Municipality of Bucay takes this issue with the seriousness it deserves.
Jorge Montalvo, Director of Tourism of Bucay said that he was going out in vacation the day we called and that he did not have time to talk to us. Patricio Montalvo (Jorge Montalvo’s brother) who is in charge of the garbage collection of Bucay claimed not knowing where the dump was but then ended up agreeing to cleaning up the area before the trip.
Barefoot Expeditions sent a formal letter of complaint to the Mayor of Bucay to urge them to take action before the destruction is too vast.
